Let’s learn various words describing rain.
I have covered news from around the world.
I am an international news reporter who wrote articles in English and also worked as an English news anchor.
It is nicknamed “kisha-kokusai-sennsei” that means “International newscaster-sennsei”.
I had no experience studying abroad when I was a student. But I developed a self-taught method. I gained experience as a journalist in international news. As a result, I mastered English.
I mastered not only English but also foreign languages such as Chinese. As a result, I even obtained a national qualification as an interpreter. Let’s enjoy “Kikakoku English” together!

Japanese onomatopoeia

Last time, we learned an onomatopoeia, which goes
どきどき. どきどき.
It’s the sound of a heartbeat and it describes your
state of mind — a little bit nervous or you’re filled with
joyful expectations.

Do you know there are a wide variety of onomatopoeia
describing rain in Japanese?
For example…ざあざあ。ざあざあ。
…is the sound of heavy rain.
雨がざあざあ降っています。It’s raining heavily.
雨がざあざあ降っています。
You often say, 外は、ざあざあ降りの雨です。
外は、ざあざあ降りの雨です。
Meaning, it’s raining heavily outside.
ぱらぱら。ぱらぱら。
…may be equal to “pit-a-pat.”
ぱらぱら。ぱらぱら。
ぽつぽつ。ぽつぽつ。
…is the sound of pity patter of raindrops
ぽつぽつ。ぽつぽつ。
雨がぽつぽつ降り出しました。
Could be translated….”It began to sprinkle.”
And, しとしと。しとしと。
This is a soft, gentle, and long-lasting rain.
日本の6月は、いつも雨がしとしと降っています。
しとしと。しとしと。

Let’s go on to learn various words describing rain.
Let’s go on to learn various words describing rain.

横殴りの雨。”横殴り” literally means “to get a punch
from the side!” Oh! OUCH!!
In English, it must be a “driving rain.”
にわか雨。にわか雨 is a sudden shower.
通り雨。
A verb “通る” is to pass.
So, this is a passing shower.
霧雨。Be careful about its pronunciation.
It’s not Kiri-ame, but Kiri-Same.
霧 is mist or fog. So, this means a misty rain.
kisha-kokusai-sennsei
夕立。Yuudachi.
It has no word “雨.” But it’s an evening shower.
This word makes us imagine a hot summer
evening when you were suddenly caught
in a shower. You would also remember the
feeling of hot and humid air before the shower,
and refreshingly cool air after that.
How did you like today’s lesson?
Now you know the Japanese language has
abundant expressions describing rains.
and they often leave you feeling the poetic
sense.
